The NCCHT Accelerator will drive the development and deployment of new technologies to solve the big issues in children’s health.
The United Kingdom has the biggest population of children in Europe, and there are 1.8 billion young people in the world today. The impact that we have on the health and well-being of children and young people will have a lasting impact on the future population's health, wealth and prosperity. Part of the mission to support this cause is the development of a new National Centre for Child Health Technology (NCCHT), which will be a leader in the world of paediatrics, creating the most advanced and integrated healthcare system for children.
Located at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, the centre will bring together industry, academia, clinicians, patients and families to create high-value products at pace to impact and improve the future and long-term health of children and young people. The NCCHT will offer a range of crucial services, one of which is the Children & Young People’s HealthTech Accelerator, which is tasked with providing an opportunity to deliver ground-breaking medical technologies for children.
Working directly with the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, UP will deliver a world-class 12-week accelerator programme on behalf of the NCCHT, driving market adoption of new health technologies from early-stage companies and fast-tracking them throughout the NHS and into international markets and unlocking private sector investment through an emphasis on building great businesses, not just great products.
The National Centre of Child Health Technology will be the most advanced and largest child health technology centre in the world and the first of its kind.
Early years intervention using new, innovative, technological solutions has the potential to greatly improve the health of children as they mature, whilst demonstrating significant savings in the
NHS. Long-term conditions in childhood, including asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, neuro disability, and
mental health disorders, affect millions of children and cost the NHS billions of pounds annually.
The NCCHT will bring together leading global industry partners, small- and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs), academics, clinicians, designers, computer scientists, and engineers directly
with patients and their families, providing rapid knowledge transfer for digital and technology
development at scale.
The basis of the programme is focused on helping emerging businesses demonstrate how they can create value in a real-world environment both in the NHS and more widely. The programme is action-based and will be laser-focused on tangible outcomes. Successful applicants will gain access to a range of carefully chosen learning events and practical opportunities. The tailored programme, devised by UP, will see the cohort engage with experts from within the NHS as well as engaged decision-makers from related fields, industry partners and investors.
